Everyman HYBRID
emh037.jpg

Time and space flee every which way, disregarding your beloved logic.

The Everyman HYBRID video account concerns the creators and audience of an amateur health and fitness channel as they follow a series of carefully-orchestrated clue trails to account for the strange occurrences surrounding it. These trails all end in forking paths that lead to locations shrouded in urban legend, deeper into the woods we call reality, and down the rabbit hole to beyond its known limits.

Table of Contents

Act One

  • March 21, 2010 – the first EverymanHYBRID fitness video introduces Vincent, Evan, and Jeff as host, nutritional correspondent, and cameraman/editor of the show, respectively; they and the audience are called “HYBRIDs” as part of a gimmick

  • May 14, 2010 – an odd, disjointed video entitled “. . .” appears on the EverymanHYBRID channel; it includes a conversation where the boys suspect their friend Nick of recently breaking into Evan’s house disguised as the Slender Man, which they might work into the fitness series’ running gag of Slender Man appearances
    • May 15, 2010 – EverymanHYBRID tweets about “something really, really… odd” happening
  • May 17, 2010 – the sixth EverymanHYBRID fitness video, about healthy eating, shows the incident where the boys encounter (and subsequently lose sight of) the Slender Man on Evan’s second floor; it could not have been their friend Daniel, who played it in their videos, because he was present at the time
  • May 18, 2010 – Jeff tweets that the group have “checked in on Evan and his family - they're terrified, to say the least.”
    • May 20, 2010 – the boys upload “Public Service Announcement” to explain the apparent prank surrounding them (“let’s just say that not all of [the Slender Man appearances] are ours”); they plan to continue the fitness series soon enough
  • May 30, 2010 – the boys go hiking in Baldpate Mountain, New Jersey with their friend Ryan, Jeff’s younger brother Alex, and Jeff’s girlfriend Jessa; they upload it as “A Day in the Life” the following day
  • June 1, 2010 – the boys announce a two-part special they are preparing on sleep deprivation (Vince and Jeff) and dreaming (Evan)

    • June 15, 2010 – the CANYOUSEETHEWORDS blogger claims not to know an Evan when asked
    • Vince and Jeff upload their sketches to Twitter
    • June 16, 2010 – the video has Evan recalling a nightmare about children disappearing from a town, screaming coming from the woods, and bags turning up in the trees; he and the others never acknowledge it afterwards despite its place in the video
    • June 17, 2010 – the CANYOUSEETHEWORDS blogger posts a video revealing herself to be an anonymous art student at Princeton; players soon nickname her “Damsel”
  • June 20, 2010 – the “- - -” video turns up on the EverymanHYBRID channel, including previously-unseen footage from the Baldpate Mountain trip and the boys having an argument on whether to continue making videos; Vince is for it, Jeff is against it, and Evan is ready to suggest that the Slender Man is real
    • June 21, 2010 – Damsel refers to “past trauma” as the reason for her doctor’s appointment and considers watching the EverymanHYBRID videos when someone directs her to them
    • June 22, 2010 – on Twitter, Jeff asks why viewers keep asking the group about a video called “- - -”; it soon becomes apparent that they cannot perceive the existence of “Morse code videos” on their channel, nor certain clips within their videos (such as Evan describing his nightmare) –not even through links or screencaps, which they perceive as defunct
    • Damsel cites “it” as the reason for her migration north, having previously lived with her family and attended the Alabama School of Fine Arts
    • June 25, 2010 – on Twitter, the boys announce a giveaway of EverymanHYBRID wristbands to 100 people who send in their shipping addresses
    • Damsel posts a video about how she doesn’t mind being friendless at the moment and thinks, after having watched their videos, that the EverymanHYBRID boys are messing with things they don’t understand; later that day, she reveals that her parents are dead
  • June 29, 2010 – Damsel receives a paper at her door with a set of coordinates on it

  • July 12, 2010 – the seventh EverymanHYBRID fitness video, about self-defense, has Jeff announcing a contest for viewers to promote the channel
    • July 24, 2010 – Vince, Evan, Jeff, Jessa, and Alex livestream, announcing Magus00 (UF) and stormoftara (SA) as winners of the promotion contest; they acknowledge CANYOUSEETHEWORDS and the box but do not intend to get involved, Evan can be seen pacing with purple duct tape over his mouth, and Jeff gives Jessa a hamsa necklace
    • July 30, 2010 – Damsel happens to pass by the EverymanHYBRID boys at Hoagie Haven
    • August 9, 2010 - Damsel posts a video of herself and Jessa in which Evan can be seen running in the background
  • August 11, 2010 – Vince, Evan, and Jeff attempt to film a hiking video in the woods but encounter the Slender Man, which Evan chases with a knife; they all find garbage bags full of viscera hanging from the trees, Jeff leaves later that night to “look for something”, and Vince and Evan receive no word from Jessa
    • August 12, 2010 – in the “Joke’s Over” video of this event, Vince notes that they will now use the channel to document events
  • August 15, 2010 – Damsel posts an image of more coordinates from a box at her door and writes, “telling my story only got the last group who tried to help me killed. Was that a fun trip north.”

    • Vince and Evan search Jeff’s room and find, among other things, a USB drive
  • August 19, 2010 – Vince uses “#wheresjeff” on Twitter and uploads the search of his room as “Jeff”
    • Jeff uploads “I'm okay.”, a video taken from his burnt-out elementary school in which he describes being trapped inside it during the fire as a child; he reports finding medical documents inside and plans to continue the roadtrip alone
    • August 20, 2010 – Damsel uses “#wheresjeff” because she has also not seen Jessa in a week
  • August 25, 2010 – hidden video “. -” shows Jeff asking a woman named Mrs. Corenthal about whether his friends were ever her husband’s patients; she only claims that Doctor Corenthal is dead after Jeff asks if he ever had a patient named “HABIT”
    • A Wikipedia article on Dr. James Corenthal surfaces from user “UnbreakableHabit”, stating that Corenthal worked at the Fairmount Children’s Home in Alliance, Ohio when, in 1971, “public criticism ensued following nursing staff injuries and a single death due to patient unrest” and the word “HABIT” was scrawled into the margins of its reports; Corenthal is alleged to have committed suicide in 2007 at the latest
  • August 26, 2010 – Vince uploads “78of76.avi” from the USB drive; in an event they cannot remember, it shows the group’s trip to Baldpate Mountain warping them to a beach at night (where, as in previous videos, their clothes have changed)
    • Jeff uploads “No hysterics. Not yet.”, claiming that someone is leading him on with the clue trail but would not have counted on him obtaining the documents; the description refers to a postcard he has received
    • August 29, 2010 – Jeff returns to New Jersey, still determined to find Jessa
    • September 2, 2010 – a policeman attempts to question Damsel about Jessa, and on her blog she expresses regret for having flushed her pills (and made friends)
    • September 4, 2010 – the boys explore Jeff’s elementary school and find only a note signed “Linnie” (“the sight of its black eyes, those markings; this blight is not human, and now has claimed another one of us”); they encounter the Slender Man, and Evan ends the video acknowledging its existence and stating his plans to kill it
  • September 6, 2010 – Alex posts “My First Video Chaps!” to his channel WickedStickyAlex, which he wants to use to make fun of Jeff’s paranoia (claiming that their parents could get him in trouble for it)
    • September 9, 2010 – Damsel posts about how police are still suspicious of her after her “history” up north, although she was never charged with anything
    • Alex posts “Troll Catch”, in which he teases Jeff with a fake Slender Man; he is offended and refuses to believe Alex’s claim that Jessa just broke up with him (“and by the way, I apologized afterwards”)
    • September 21, 2010 – Jeff goes to the park, where Damsel spots and considers approaching him (but never does)
    • September 24, 2010 – Alex writes in a conversation with Didz (UF), “one time it looked like a big white possum or something got into the house. But it was gone in seconds. I looked around and nothing. that was most likely a dream lol”
  • September 26, 2010 – the boys and their friend Jessie follow Jeff’s postcard (“Greetings, from the land of ashen waste”) to Lambertville High School, where Vince and Jeff find a woman’s body and spot something gray crawling in the bushes; Jessie tells them that James Corenthal was her estranged uncle, players identify the monster as the Rake, and the video title of “Cops Checked, No Body” says it all
    • Jeff posts an image of the postcard to Twitter so that viewers may submit guesses as to where it is directing them
    • September 30, 2010 – Damsel reports more instances of police at her door and declines to contact the EverymanHYBRID group due to mutual resentment

    • October 2, 2010 – Alex’s YouTube background briefly changes to a black-eyed version of the man it always showed –identified by players as Larry Langford, mayor of Birmingham, Alabama (home of Damsel’s Alabama School of Fine Arts)
  • October 5, 2010 – Damsel expresses resignation to whatever the police will do, planning to tell them the truth
    • Jeff commemorates Jessa with the video “In which I assume the role of a 13 year old MySpace girl.”
    • Jeff and Damsel have a Twitter fight, culminating in Jeff’s decision to report her to the police
    • October 7, 2010 – Evan calls Jeff out on this with the video “Injustice.”
    • Alex posts “Good things to come” on his decision to film Sparky’s odd behavior
    • October 8, 2010 – Damsel reports her imminent detainment and that she has another post queued in case she does not return
    • October 9, 2010 – Jeff defends his actions on Twitter but admits that he feels no better for them; he responds to three player guesses as to the postcard’s meaning
  • October 10, 2010 – Alex’s channel description briefly changes to a quote from the Chicago Fire Department spokesman (a different Larry Langford)
    • Players discover two “leaked videos” in the Related Videos section called “Slender Man” and “Welcome to the ARK”, the former of which has Evan becoming violent from the Slender Man’s influence and the latter of which shows the boys in a realm where time stops, technology fails, night is permanent, and the monsters prowl; their same drowning footage shows up in later videos but they are otherwise irrelevant
    • October 16, 2010 – Magus00 (UF) posts “Congratulations Magus!.avi”, a video he received for winning the promotion contest; it includes a scene of Jeff spotting Jessa’s silhouette as he and Vince encounter the Slender Man
    • Jeff calls the video a “sick joke” on Twitter, frustrated with the situation rather than the player himself
  • October 22, 2010 – the boys follow a potential lead to the burnt-out Greenpoint Terminal Market in Brooklyn, New York, where they encounter the Slender Man; Evan ends up disoriented and coughing up blood after trying to attack it with a bat, and the boys’ attempt to hit it with the car lands them unconscious in one of their basements
    • October 23, 2010 – in the “Ashen Waste” video of events, Vince reads the note from the disappeared body and it is another from Linnie with a new set of coordinates
    • October 25, 2010 – FlyingWarhorse on UnFiction and his wife follow the coordinates to Lambertville, New Jersey and discover the third hidden box of seven – a hollow book containing defaced photographs, a page of coded writing, a note, and a Corenthal letter
      • The 1971 Corenthal letter describes the Fairmount Children’s Home’s youngest patient, Evan, who would only go by the nickname “HABIT” and whose homicidal tendencies included the murder of a nurse
    • An unsigned tweet referencing HABIT appears and subsequently disappears from the EverymanHYBRID Twitter
    • October 26, 2010 – Jeff responds to observations by Fissioninferno on Twitter with a diagram “explaining” how known factions of events relate to each other
    • Another deleted “phantom tweet” references HABIT

    • Alex posts “Business Cards on a Plane”, his discovery of an EverymanHYBRID business card with coordinates at the end of the paper trail in his closet
    • October 30, 2010 – EverymanHYBRID again phantom tweets in response to impy1973 (“YOU ARE ALL IN THE SAME. SINKING. VESSEL.”)
    • Ladymatsuyah on UnFiction follows the coordinates to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania and finds a bag containing a Powerade bottle, a note from William to Linnie, and a Corenthal letter
      • The 1971 Corenthal letter describes the young patient Vincent from the same mining town as Evan, who was found at the murder scene of a Reverend who lured him in with pirate games; the child simply remarked that “Man doesn’t share”
  • November 1, 2010 – Damsel’s queued post is published due to her absence, and in it she apologizes to everyone, forgives Jeff, and admits to have lied about her family dying in a house fire; she actually found them eviscerated in garbage bags and lit the house on fire herself after the Slender Man, which had haunted her dreams since childhood, compelled her to travel north
    • November 4, 2010 – a series of phantom tweets seems to be an argument between the previous all-caps phantom tweeter and a new one with standard capitalization (“IT IS I WHO inHABITS THIS SANCTUARY”/“Oh, a classic power struggle is it?”)
    • Vince, Evan, and Jeff visit Centralia, Pennsylvania due to its potential to be the “land of ashen waste”, and the discovery of Jessa’s hamsa necklace prompts Jeff to admit defeat on finding her and insist that they rescue Damsel; off-camera, he discovers a note nearby it that reads “-’s -ssword -to the”
  • November 5, 2010 – Alex’s YouTube background changes back to its black-eyed version
    • Alex posts “VID00006.MP4”, in which he cleans three deep cuts on his arm
    • November 6, 2010 – Alex, who does not want Jeff to know about this at such a difficult time, explains in “I'm Okay” that he has barricaded his closet door after being attacked by a disfigured creature with black eyes –the Rake, which now resides there
    • Alex’s YouTube background changes back to normal, then to an image of a dead rabbit, then back again
  • November 9, 2010 – evilcactus on UnFiction, one of the wristband-contest participants, receives the VII Letter
  • The Corenthal letter from 1981 describes how after “the last child from the ‘Mining-Town Four’ has finally succumbed”, Corenthal plans to protect his surviving child, Linnie, from her “feral” personal demon by finding new guardians for her; the letter is covered in “VII” in reference to an EverymanHYBRID-related dream described by DixieWolf (UF)
    • A phantom tweet verifies the letter’s authenticity
    • November 13, 2010 – hidden video “. . . .” states that Jeff’s “loss blinds him” to Alex’s predicament; Damsel is shown in a room with flickering lights after a similar shot of Evan, and the previously-established rabbit motif is emphasized
    • November 14, 2010 – a phantom tweet simply reads “TILT”
    • November 15, 2010 – old_familiar_way (UF) notices that tilting one’s laptop screen on the CANYOUSEETHEWORDS background reveals the words “this is no longer their game. consider yourself marked.”
    • November 18, 2010 – Evan receives a USB drive of surveillance footage of Alex after the attack and talks to him about it, realizing that the Rake is what they saw at Lambertville; with Jeff’s help, Evan chains the doors of the ransacked room shut and Jeff apologizes for missing signs that Alex was in danger
  • November 19, 2010 – Jeff posts a Twitter invitation for viewers to meet the group in Mercer County Park, New Jersey on November 21
    • November 21, 2010 – Vince, Evan, Jeff, and Jessie meet viewer TheGreenFeathers for the hangout; on the drive back, Vince receives a call from Ryan that apparently ends in a car accident with “those noises” on the other end
    • November 24, 2010 – Vince, Evan, Jeff, and Alex visit the site of the car crash to explain that based on his body’s wounds, something (presumably the Rake) pulled Ryan out of the car; he was trying to inform them about one “SEVENTRIALSOFHABIT” that had contacted him asking for personal information and a pint of his blood, and hidden footage in the video shows Evan interrogating an empty chair while apparently not himself
    • Ryan’s screencap is linked in the video description, and it invites players (“rabbits”) into a tournament for which they are not allowed to seek outside help as Ryan had; Jeff, Vince, and Evan join as Rabbits #002-004, respectively, but Jeff does not want Alex to join

Act Two

  • November 25, 2010 – players receive confirmation of their entrance into the Seven Trials, and phantom tweets provide information on registration up until the point at which it closes
    • November 26, 2010 – Vince, Evan, Jeff, and Alex hold a livestream most notable for its revelation that Jeff and Alex’s parents are dead, but Alex pretends that they are still alive to cope; the Corenthal papers found by players included all the ones Jeff found at his elementary school except for an additional one with a patient named Jeffrey, which he still sees as an unsettling coincidence

    • HABIT makes phantom tweets poking fun at the idea that the Slender Man or the Rake (“THE BIG GUY AND SNOOPY”) are the other unknown tweeter, to which they respond “Go play your little game, children. Nothing more to see here”; Jeff receives these on his phone with much confusion

  • October 10, 2016 – “two thousand three hundred ninety-five” reveals that after Vince escapes the apartment, HABIT captures him in the woods and has a talk in Vince’s basement where he says Vince and “the North Star” are key to defeating the Slender Man and forces him to “show them” (viewers) the footage of his suicide as it plays on a screen in front of him

    • October 11, 2017 – TheSharpOne (Reddit/Discord) receives a letter after contacting Davidson’s P.O. Box; the lawyer writes that Corenthal has not been in touch (and calls Vine “a medium that's here to stay” even though it shut down in 2016), and promises to send a package
    • November 13, 2017 – TheSharpOne (Reddit/Discord) receives the William Davidson Package; it contains materials related to various localities, a letter from a persecuted Corenthal to Adam Roberts, a note about how Elizabeth “is going to help” the two of them, and an e-mail in which Davidson questions Corenthal about his criminal charges and connection to the clairvoyant
    • February 21, 2017 – TheSharpOne (Reddit/Discord) receives the Princeton Tapes on a USB drive from an unprompted package; the Princeton Tapes, prefaced with a note from Jeff, come from a late-1980s iteration of Vince who had a history with the Slender Man, learned that the Rake does not kill him due to “an agreement” with the Slender Man, investigated his Fairmount iteration, and died on tape with symptoms of the Slender Man’s influence

    • House Phone 2005″ reveals via Corenthal’s answering machine that HABIT manipulated Corenthal into the Lambertville eatery massacre by possessing Elizabeth (previously a benefactor) to lure him, Evan to foretell Corenthal’s death, and the customers to attack him; Corenthal escapes to Baldpate expecting to die, leaving Maryann a remorseful goodbye and instructions (“follow our protocol”)
    • Tape 3″ is a Princeton Tapes permutation where Vince meets a cryptoozology zine editor named Roger and learns that the Slender Man spreads through awareness; Patrick Andersen of the Andersen Journals calls to reveal that he belongs to the iteration cycle too but remembers, Corenthal has been Vince in another timeline and has potential to end the cycles and monsters for good (just as our Vince almost did, Patrick says), and this Vince must overdose after learning all this (he accepts).
    • Roger’s cryptozoology zine commemorates the Mining Tour Four with words more meaningful than he could know (“may we forever fight against such evil and hold a stark light against the great, reaching darkness”)
  • January 1, 2019 – “Introductions” shows Vince joining Evan, Jeff, and Corenthal in the other plane, expressing remorse for his past iteration and leaving the camera behind (as the cycle presumably begins anew)
